Poker With Beer!!

  I attended an event held at co-working space Co-Edo to play poker with beer!! An iOS application developer Jon-san from Iceland originally joined Co-Edo members a few weeks ago and he know the poker Texas Hold'em well, so Co-Edo owner Tanaka-san planned to play it with other members.

  コワーキングスペース Co-Edo で、ポーカー講習会 with Beer というイベントがあったので参加してきました。数週間前にアイスランド出身でiOSアプリ開発者のJonさんがCo-Edoのメンバーに加わり、テキサスホールデムというポーカーのことをよく知っていたので、Co-Edoオーナーの田中さんが、他のメンバーとポーカーをやるイベントを企画しました。

  Texas Hold'em is a kind of poker games and the most popular poker game in the world. It's a little more complicated about calculating amount of chips than well known poker in Japan, but it's more exciting and required strategy. We need to think other players' thinking and chips. About detail of the rule, please google it.

　テキサスホールデムはポーカーの一種で、世界では最もよく知られているポーカーです。日本で一般的なポーカーよりも少しチップの計算が複雑ですが、より戦略が求められて熱中できます。他のプレイヤーの考えとチップの残りをよく考えなくてはなりません。ルールの詳細についてはGoogleなどで検索してみてください。

  I was late at the event, so I don't know about the first part of the game, and finally, Tanaka-san won the game!! The rule of Texas Hold'em requires just only one winner, and he got whole chips. He is not only the owner of co-working space Co-Edo, but also the owner of Co-Edo Bank lol

　私は遅れての参加だったので、ゲームの前半がどうだったのかはわかりませんが、最終的に田中さんの勝利でした！テキサスホールデムのルールでは一人勝ちの状態になるまでプレイするので、田中さんがすべてのチップをゲットしました。コワーキングスペース Co-Edo だけでなく、Co-Edo 銀行のオーナーにもなってましたw

  I lost the game, but it was so fun and happy that I got new friends. I'm looking forward to play the poker again and see Jon-san and other members played it together next time!

　私はゲームには負けましたが、とても面白かったですし、新しい友達ができたのも嬉しいですね。またのポーカーの機会と、Jonさんや一緒にプレイした他のメンバーと会えるのを楽しみにしています！

Co-Edo Morning English on Xmas day!!

  Merry Christmas!! It was the Xmas day. How was it going? This year has almost finished, and 2014 is coming soon. It was the last Morning English Talks in 2013.

　メリークリスマス！今回の朝会はクリスマスでした。皆さんはどうでしたか？今年ももうすぐ終わって2014年も間近ですね。2013年の英語朝活は今回が最後です。

  We talked with Daniel via Skype. It had been a long time since we last talked. He lived in Thailand, and moved back to the US. He live in Oregon now. I heard that it's snowing and so cold there.

　久しぶりにDanielさんとSkypeでトークしました。彼はタイに住んでいましたが、アメリカに戻って今はオレゴンに住んでいます。とても寒くて雪も降っているらしいです。

  The theme of the talk was that "seven tasty meals, five joys and three meetings" offered by Tanaka-san. He said he think about it every end of the year. My biggest thing in this year is that I've been Singapore for two weeks as business trip. It was first travel abroad for me. There were many tasty foods, fun and meetings.

　Skypeトークのテーマは田中さんから提案があって、「七味五悦三会（しちみごえつさんえ）」でした。今年あった、７つのおいしいもの、５つの楽しいこと、３つの出会いについて話そうというもので、田中さんは毎年年末にその年の振り返りとしてこれをやっているそうです。私の今年最も大きかったできごとはシンガポールに二週間出張で行ったことですね。私にとっての初海外旅行でした。おいしい食べ物も楽しいことも、出会いもたくさんありました。

  After the Skype talk, we talked about method to learn English. Urasoko-san wants to know effective method since he will speak and discuss with foreigners in English at a conference in the US next year.

　Skypeトークの後は、英語学習メソッドについて話しました。浦底さんが来年アメリカでのカンファレンスに参加されるということで、効果的な英語学習メソッドを知りたいということでした。

  We discussed about some methods. Skype English lesson, English conversation cafe or bar, watching Apple's presentations or movies, NHK English lesson programs, CNN English magazine, shadowing, power ondoku, and so on.

　いくつかの学習メソッドについて話しました。Skype英会話、英会話カフェ or バー、Apple のプレゼンや、映画を見る、NHK英会話、CNN英語雑誌、シャドーイング、パワー音読などなど。

  Each method have their own good point. And finally, Yuki-san said that we should choose only a few methods, and continue it. It's the most important thing.

　それぞれのメソッドにはそれぞれのいいところがありますが、最後にユキさんが、いくつか少ない数の学習法を選んで、それを続けることが大事だと言ってました。

  Anyway, Yuki-san brought some sweets that she cooked!! (Oops, I forgot the name, sorry..) She said that she failed, but it was so tasty. Thanks, Yuki-san!!

　ところで、ユキさんがスイーツをつくってきてくれました！（名前忘れました。ごめんなさい。。）ユキさんは失敗したと言ってましたが、とてもおいしかったですよ。ユキさんありがとう！

  Next week's wednesday is New Year's Day, so we will skip one week and start over on January 8th. I'm looking forward Morning English Meeting next year too. I wish you a Happy New Year!!

Co-Edo Morning English on 12/18 - English Conversation and Review -

  At first, attendees were only Tanaka-san and me, so we talked about some engineering topics and about learning English in Japanese, and watched some Youtube movie by Bilingirl Chika-san.

　始めは参加者が田中さんと私だけだったので、エンジニアリング関連のトピックスや英語の勉強の仕方などについて日本語で話したり、バイリンガールちかさんのYoutube動画を数本見たりしていました。

  And later, Hassy joined the meeting. We tried language exchange-liked style. We talked about a topic in English, and then, we reviewed the sentences we used. During talking in English, we memorized or wrote down sentences that we didn't know how we should say, or we can say it better.

　その後ハッシーも参加。Language Exchange風なスタイルでの勉強法を試してみました。はじめにある一つのトピックスについて英語で話した後、会話で使ったセンテンスについて日本語で振り返ります。英語で話しているときに、英語でどのように言うかわからなかったり、もっと良い表現があると思ったものを覚えておくかメモを取っておきます。

  We talked about PHP framework, CakePHP and FuelPHP since we were all web engineers at the meeting. For instance, from when we use it, what makes it nice, and so on.

　この日は参加者がみんなWebエンジニアだったので、PHPフレームワークのCakePHPとFuelPHPについて話しました。例えばいつからそれを使っているかとか、そのフレームワークのどんなところが良いのか、など。

  What I couldn't say in English is the word "intuitive". I wanted to say that I can use the framework intuitively. I can now say it!

　私が英語で言えなかったのは、「直感的に」という意味の「intuitive」。直感的に使えるということを言いたかったのですがわかりませんでした。今は言えます！

  And I said that I don't use other PHP framework in conversation, but I should say that I've never used other PHP framework.

　それと会話の中で「I don't use other PHP framework.」と言ったのですが、他のPHPフレームワークは使ったことがないということを言いたかったので、「I've never used other PHP framework.」と言うべきでした。

  Other than that, we talked about the difference between "I think" and "I guess", about the phrase "when I look back". Please tell us the difference of nuance between think and guess, someone native speakers!

　それ以外には「I think」と「I guess」の違いや、「振り返ってみると」といった表現についても話しました。ネイティブスピーカーの方どなたかthinkとguessのニュアンスの違いを教えてください！

  And then, I guess the style we tried is good to learn English. It's easier to memorize what I couldn't say in English in real conversations than just reading textbooks. And it's also nice to offer better phrases from other members. And in my opinion, casual topics is better than big one for conversation. When I talk about difficult theme, it's hard to discuss even if it's in Japanese.

　ところでこのスタイルは英語を勉強するのには良さそうだと思いました。実際の会話の中で言えなかったフレーズは、テキストブックを読んだだけのものより覚えやすいですし、他のメンバーからより良い表現を提案してもらえるのも良いと思います。それと、トークのトピックスはカジュアルなものがいいと思いますね。難しいテーマだと日本語でさえ会話するのは難しいですし。

  Anyway, next meeting's day is the Xmas day!! Will it be the Xmas special? lol

Co-Edo Xmas Party!!

  Co-Edo Xmas party held last Saturday and I attended it. It was like a potluck party, so attendees brought not only foods but also Xmas decorations and so on.

　土曜日にCo-Edoクリスマスパーティーが開催されたので参加してきました。持ち寄りのパーティーのような感じだったので、みんな食べ物だけでなく、クリスマスの飾り付け等も持ち寄ってのパーティーでした。

  Attendees were mainly users of Co-Edo, and they were with their family and there were some users I hadn't met, but we all enjoyed many dishes and talking.

　参加者は主にCo-Edoのユーザで、家族を連れてきていたり、まだ私が会ったことのない方もいましたが、みんなでたくさんの料理やトークを楽しみました。

  After that, We did some funny games like musical chairs, etc. Even adults played seriously, so it was fun! And Riza's lead is always great!! We all enjoyed the games!!

　その後、椅子取りゲーム等のゲームをいくつかやりました。大人も本気でやっていて楽しかったです！そしてリザさんのリードはいつも素晴らしいですね！！みんなすごく盛り上がってました！！

The party was for celebrate not only Christmas but also some member's birthday! So we sang a birthday song, and celebrated them.

　パーティーはクリスマスをお祝いするだけでなく、何人かのメンバーの誕生日のお祝いでもありました。なのでバースデーソングを歌って彼らの誕生日のお祝いもしましたよ。

  Moreover, we celebrated one more thing. Co-Edo started in January this year. It's almost one year since Co-Edo started. So we prepared surprise celebration for Tanaka-san, owner of Co-Edo! Fujikawa-san collected messages from Co-Edo users and Tanaka-san's friends, Hassy made a memorial movie of Co-Edo, and Chieko-san read celebration letters from some Tanaka-san's friends. We celebrated him and his family by pulling party poppers!!

さらに、もうひとつお祝いをしました。Co-Edoは今年の１月にスタートして、もうすぐ一年になります。そこでサプライズで田中さんへのお祝いを用意しました。藤川さんがCo-Edoユーザや田中さんの友達から寄せ書きを集め、はっしーが記念の動画を作成し、チエコさんがいくつかお祝いのメッセージを読み上げました。そしてみんなでクラッカーを鳴らしてお祝い！

  Not only Tanaka-san but also his wife were so impressed and cried! And some attendees also cried in sympathy. His awesome personality made this warm community. We all happy joining Co-Edo members, Tanaka-san!

　田中さんだけでなく奥様も感激して泣いていました。他にも何人かもらい泣きしてましたね。田中さんのすてきな人柄がこんな暖かいコミュニティを作ったんですね。みんなCo-Edoの仲間に加われて幸せですよ、田中さん！

　Of course, we exchanged presents because it was a Xmas party! I got a Starbucks card. I'm so happy!

　もちろん、クリスマスパーティーですからプレゼント交換もしました。私はStarbucksカードいただきました！

  It was so happy party! So let's have it next year and celebrate 2 years anniversary of Co-Edo!!

　とっても楽しいパーティーでした。ぜひ来年もやりましょう。そしてCo-Edoの二周年もお祝いしましょう！！

Co-Edo Morning English on 12/11 - Free Conversation -

  We enjoyed a free conversation with 4 members at yesterday's Co-Edo Morning English since Yuki-san got tired of roleplay of the movie "Social Network" lol I think it's important to do something that interest us to learn English, exactly.

　昨日のCo-Edo朝活は、ユキさんが Social Netowrk のロールプレイには飽きてしまったということでw、メンバー4人でフリートークを楽しみました。興味を持てることをするのが英語学習には大切ですよね。

  We talked about many topics. About new member of Co-Edo from Iceland, about a member of Morning English's big choice in his life, about housework by husband, about Kagurazaka, and so on. 

　話題は様々で、アイスランド出身のCo-Edoの新メンバー、朝活メンバーの大きな決断、夫の家事参加、神楽坂などについて話しました。

  I didn't even know where Iceland is lol It's northern Europe, near Greenland. It must be cold!

　アイスランドはどこにあるかすら知りませんでしたが、ヨーロッパの北の方、グリーンランドの近くにあるんですね。絶対寒い！

　And a member's choice is so big and challenging! It will be hard way but I hope you will be successful. Good luck, and we are always with you, friend!

　そして、メンバーの一人の決断はとても大きい、チャレンジングなものでした！道のりは大変だと思いますが、成功することを願います。グッドラック、私たちはいつも応援してますよ！

　Anyway, recently, Kagurazaka in Tokyo is like French, a member said. When I want to go to French, I shold go to Kagurazaka first lol

　ところで、最近神楽坂はフランスのようになっているんだとか。フランスに行きたいときにはまず神楽坂へ行くべきですねw

　I thought free conversation is also good if we talk proactively. We don't need any big topics. It's enough talking about some small topics casually. What's nice for next week?

　積極的に話す気持ちがあれば、フリートークも良さそうです。大きなテーマは必要なくて、いくつかの小さなテーマについて気軽に話すだけでも十分だと思います。次週は何しましょうかねー。

QQ English Second Trial Lesson! - Callan Method -

　前回に引き続き、QQ English の体験レッスン２回目です。今回はカラン・メソッドの実際のカリキュラムの体験です。

　レッスンのはじめにカラン・メソッドについての説明があってから、実際のレッスンスタート。カラン・メソッドの特徴はやはりとにかく頭の中で母国語で考えたり翻訳する時間を与えないということだと思います。普通の英会話だと教材などをもとに先生がゆっくり説明して、生徒が話すのに時間がかかっても待ってくれますが、カラン・メソッドではレッスン中に使うテキストはない上に、最初からハイスピード。

　まずイラストなどをもとに先生が質問を2回繰り返し、そのまま回答文も言ってくれるのでよく聞きます。

  Teacher :  What's this? What's this? It's a pen.

                 What's this? What's this? It's a pencil.

                 What's this? What's this? It's a book.

　いくつかのイラストについて連続でそれを続け、再び最初のイラストに戻って、先生がまた質問を2回繰り返しますので、今度は生徒が回答します。

  Teacher : What's this? What's this?

  Student : It's a pen.

  Teacher : What's this? What's this?

  Student : It's a pencil.

  Teacher : What's this? What's this?

  Student : It's a book.

　このとき生徒が即答できないとすぐに先生が回答を言い始めますので、流れについていくには即答できるようにしなければいけません。また、冠詞の a などを忘れた場合にも訂正されるのと、短縮できる文（it is -> it's など）は必ず短縮した形で言うことが要求されますので、正確にフルセンテンスで即答する必要があります。

　さらに否定文も加わってきます。

  Teacher : Is this a pen? Is this a pen?

  Student : No, it's not a pen. It's a pencil.

  Teacher : Is this a book? Is this a book?

  Student : No, it's not a book. It's a pen.

  Teacher : Is this a pencil? Is this a pencil?

  Student : No, it's not a pencil. It's a book.

　簡単な文ではありますが、普段フルセンテンスで回答することってあまりないですし、参照するテキストもないので、これだけでもスピードについていこうと思うとかなり大変です。

　

　さらにさらに、on, in, under など、使うものは同じでも場所を表す部分だけ違うようなパターンだとわけがわからなくなってきます。

  Teacher : Is the pen under the book?

  Student : No, the pen's not under the book. The pen's on the book.

  Teacher : Is the pen on the book?

  Student : No, the pen's not on the book. The pen's in the book.

  Teacher : Is the pen in the book?

  Student : No, the pen's not in the book. The pen's under the book.

　確かにこれは日本語で文章考えて英語に訳して、という手順を踏んでいるとスピードについていけません。on, in, under などが直接イメージとして持てていないときついですね。また、回答には質問文の大部分を組み替えた形の文が含まれるのと、そもそも質問についてもちゃんと理解する必要があるので、リスニングの訓練にもなると思います。スピードについていくにはかなり集中しなければいけませんし。

　自分にはとても有効だと思うのですが、無料体験の範囲はここまでなので、今後継続していくかは検討しないといけませんね。カラン・メソッドのカリキュラムは他のカリキュラムと違って復習用のテキストを購入しないといけないので、レッスン料以外の費用もかかってくるのと、他にすでにLangrichをやっているので、経済的にどうかなぁというところです。Langrichが休会制度とかあればしばらくカラン・メソッドの方をやってみたいんですけどね。

ちょっと画質が荒いのは残念かな。

QQ English First Trial Lesson!

　どこで見たのかは忘れましたが、カラン・メソッドという英語学習法があるということで、それをオンラインで提供しているQQ Englishというオンライン英会話スクールに申し込んでみました。

　カラン・メソッドというのは、頭の中で日本語と英語の翻訳を行う癖をなくし、会話の反射速度、表現の正確性、発音の正確性を向上させることを目的とした訓練方法で、講師からの質問に対してフルセンテンスで即答し、それを反復するというメソッドだそうです。対象としては、会話の反応速度を上げたい人とか、読み書きはできるけど会話に自信がない人に効果的だとか。

　以前からオンライン英会話のLangrichは継続しているのですが、やはり頭の中で日本語と英語を変換することはやめられていないのと、会話の時にも頭の中で言いたいことを組み立てるのに時間がかかってしまってスムーズにしゃべれないのを改善したいと思っていて、QQ Englishは無料体験できるということなので試しに申し込んでみました。

　初回はレッスンの前後に日本人インストラクターによるガイダンスがあります。レッスン前はレッスンの進め方などについての説明で、レッスン後はカリキュラムや今後の予約などについての説明です。これから英会話を始める人は体験レッスンの無料枠の範囲や料金プランなど不安な点も多いと思うので、こういった説明があると安心できて良いと思います。

　初回のレッスンは主に生徒の現在の英語力がどのぐらいかを判断するためのもので、短い英文メールとそれに関連する画像が複数載っているテキストをもとに、先生と会話したり、質問に答えたりしていきます。講師の方は主にフィリピン人で、今回の先生はMargarette先生でした。初回なので特に聞きやすいように話してくれていたのかとは思いますが、とてもわかりやすくて良い感じでした。質問に対しての回答はこちらが回答した後にフルセンテンスでの回答例を提示してこちらが読み上げるというあたりはカラン・メソッドに近いものなのかなーと感じました。

　今回はあまりレッスンや訓練という感じではありませんでしたが、もう一レッスン分、実際のカリキュラムの体験レッスンができるということなので、次回はカラン・メソッドのコースで体験レッスンを受けてみようと思います。カリキュラムにはカラン・メソッド以外にも英語の基礎や日常英会話などのコースがあって、そちらも選択可能ですが、自分としてはカラン・メソッドを受けてみたくて申し込んだので、カラン・メソッドの内容が良いと思えれば継続を検討しようかと思っています。

Co-Edo Morning English on 12/04 - Live Report from NY! -

  Live report by Katsuki-san from New York City!! Katsuki-san, a member of Morning English Talks, is in New York City now, so he reported about the US and NY via Skype!

　香月さんのニューヨークからの生レポート！英語朝活メンバーの香月さんが今ニューヨークに行っているので、Skypeでアメリカとニューヨークについてレポートしてくれました！

  At first, he is enjoying stay in NY very much, and he said that speaking English is fun. He think that English has rhythm unlike Japanese, so when he is speaking English, he excite.

　まず、NYでの滞在をかなり楽しんでいるそうです。そして英語を話すことが楽しくて、それは英語が日本語と違うリズムを持っているので、話しているうちにエキサイトしてくるのではないか、とのこと。

  And all American is so kindly and friendly. For example, when he was seeing a map, an American talks to him. And Yuki-san said that when she was waiting a bus at bus stop, an American talk to her, in spite of he didn't take a bus. When the bus arrived, he said goodbye and went lol

　それと、アメリカの方はみんなとても親切でフレンドリーだそうです。例えば地図を見ていると話しかけてきたりとか。ユキさんも、以前バス停でバスを待っていた時に、自分は乗らないにもかかわらず男性が話しかけてきて、バスが来たら「じゃあね」と去って行ったとかｗ

  Katsuki-san had been thinking that if he just only goes to the US, he can be a good English speaker. But it was quite wrong. If he don't speak in English proactively, he can't improve his English skill. He is an web developer and he works alone. So usually, he don't have many chances to speak in English.

　香月さんはアメリカに行きさえすれば英語話せるようになるんじゃないかと思っていたそうですが、そんなことは全くなくて、積極的に英語を使っていかないとやっぱり英語は上達しないと感じたそうです。香月さんはWebデベロッパーで一人で仕事をされているので、普段はあまり英語で話す機会がないとか。

  The most troublesome thing he had in the US is that there are not so many bathroom as Japan. He said it's so inconvenient. And he think that it is the cause of that American walk so quickly lol

　アメリカで一番困ったことは、日本のようにトイレが多くないことで、とても不便だそうです。アメリカの方がとても速く歩くのはそのせいなんじゃないかと思っているとかｗ

  His remaining mission in NY is visiting New Work City, which is famous co-working space, and putting some sticker of Co-Edo to a laptop of the owner of New Work City, and running away lol

　香月さんのNYでの残りの使命は、有名なコワーキングスペースの New Work City に行って、オーナーのラップトップPCにCo-Edoのステッカーを貼って逃げることですｗ

  He will go back to Japan this weekend. I'm looking forward to see him at next Morning English Meeting and hearing many interesting episodes!

  今週末に日本へ帰ってくるそうなので、次回の英語朝活でたくさんの面白い話が聞けることを楽しみにしています！

Co-Edo Morning English on 11/27

  Only 3 members joined this time. It's few members than usual.

  今回は3人だけの参加ということで、いつもより少し少ないメンバーでした。

  We tried roleplay of a movie "Social Network" as I mentioned. And we checked in to see the phrases of the scene. Even if it consists of simple words, it's hard to understand the nuance of the phrase for me.

  以前言ったように、映画「ソーシャルネットワーク」のロールプレイに挑戦しました。そしてそのシーンで使われているフレーズについてチェックしていきました。シンプルな単語で構成されているフレーズでも、そのニュアンスを理解するのは結構難しいんですよね。

  "You're welcome to some salad?"

  Marylin said this to Mark at lunchtime since he didn't have a lunch. In Japan, many people think that "you're welcome" is used only for response to thank. But it have a nuance of inviting or offering.

  Markがランチタイムに昼食を取っていなかったので、MarylinがMarkにこう言いました。日本では多くの人が「you're welcome」は感謝に対する返答でしか使われないと思っていますが、「遠慮せずに～してください、あなたが～することを歓迎します」というニュアンスも持っているようです。（You're welcome to come along if you like. 「よかったら一緒に行きましょうよ。」）

"They don't have roads, but they have Facebook."

  After Mark said "Checking in to see how it's going in Bosnia.", Marylin said this. It's a simple sentence, but we need to know the status in Bosnia and previous story until this scene to understand what the phrase truly means.

　Markが「ボスニアの状況をチェックしている」と言った後にMarylinが言ったセリフです。シンプルな文章ですが、この文章が本当は何を意味しているのか理解するにはボスニアの状態と、このシーンに至るまでのストーリーを知る必要がありますね。

  Other than that, we talked about American name's abbreviation, English grammar and so on. At next meeting, we are going to take a video of roleplay!

　それ以外にはアメリカ人の名前の省略の仕方や、英語の文法などについても話しました。次回はロールプレイをビデオに撮る予定です！

  And I borrowed a book about English grammar from Tanaka-san and I read the first half. It's not so hard to read, and interesting. I expect that It will change my mind of English grammar!

　あと、田中さんから英語の文法についての本をお借りしました。半分読んだところですが、読みやすいし面白いです。英語文法についての考え方を変えてくれるのではないかと期待！

Co-Edo Morning English on 11/20

  At first, we talked with Daniel in Thailand via Skype. It was the first time meeting for Yuki-san and Inoue-san with Daniel. So main topic was their introductions. Thank you always for joining, Daniel!! And it was Inoue-san's first time joining in the Morning English. Welcome!!

  まずはタイにいるダニエルさんとスカイプでトーク。ユキさんと井上さんはダニエルさんと初対面だったので、主なトピックは3人の自己紹介。ダニエルさんいつもありがとう！井上さんは英語朝活自体今回が初参加でした。ようこそ！！

Trying roleplay.

  After that, we started trying roleplay of the movie "Social Network". It was a scene of conversation with Mark Zuckerberg and Marylin Delpy. It was not so long scene, but Mark is so fast speaker! It's too hard to follow him even if I read a script! Oh, it's the speed of native speaker... We need memorize the words to follow him. So we will memorize the words of the scene by next meeting, and play it!

　そのあとは映画「ソーシャルネットワーク」のロールプレイに挑戦。Mark Zuckerberg と Marylin Delpy の会話のシーンです。そんなに長いシーンではないんですが、Markすごい早口！スクリプト読みながらでもついていけません！これがネイティブスピーカーのスピードか・・・。ついていくにはセリフを覚える必要がある、ということで次回までにこのシーンのセリフを覚えて演じます！

 And as special, Yuki-san brought pies for the meeting. Her handmade pies! It was so delicious. Thank you so much, Yuki-san!! I'm looking forward to it again next time lol

Co-Edo Morning English on 11/13

  今回はダニエルさんがお休みだったのでSkypeでのトークはなしでした。ダニエルさん、また次回！

  Anyway, some IT engineers including me attend Morning English every week. Our work is not understood well by others. So we tried describe our work to Yuki-san at the meeting. She is not a engineer. It was so hard to describe in English. In the first place, it's hard even in Japanese. Although we mixed some Japanese word, Yuki-san understood our work. And it is good training to learn English, I thought.

  ところで英語朝活には私を含め毎回数名のITエンジニアが参加しています。私たちの仕事ってあまり他の方にはよく理解してもらえてないんですよね。そこでエンジニアではないユキさんに私たちの仕事の内容を説明してみましたが、英語で説明するのはとても難しかったです。そもそも日本語でも難しいですし。日本語もミックスしての説明になってしまいましたが、ユキさんに私たちの仕事を理解してもらえたようです。そして英語を勉強するための良い訓練になると思いました。

 After that, we watched some part of a movie "Social Network". Of course in English. Mark Zuckerberg is a so fast talker!! I couldn't understand what he meant especially his long speech... We are going to try roleplay of the movie. I need to practice so hard...

 そのあとは映画「ソーシャルネットワーク」を少し見ました。もちろん英語で。マーク・ザッカーバーグ超早口！特に彼の長台詞では何言ってるかわかりませんでした。。 この映画のロールプレイをやる予定なので、頑張って練習しないといけませんね。。

The Settlers of Catan At Co-Edo Morning English Talks

These days, I attend Morning English Talks at Co-Edo every week. And last time, we played a board game "The Settlers of Catan" after we talked with native English speaker via Skype.

最近は毎週Co-Edo英語朝活に参加しています。今週の英語朝活では、ネイティブスピーカーの方とSkypeでトークした後、ボードゲームの「カタンの開拓者たち」をプレイしました。

Daniel is from Los Angeles and he lives in Thailand now. There is two-hour time difference between Japan and Thailand. So it was so early time, 5:00 am, in Thailand! But he joined for us. Thanks, Daniel.

ダニエルさんはロサンゼルス出身で今はタイに住んでいる方です。日本とは二時間の時差があるのでタイはまだ朝5時！でも私たちのために参加してくれました。ダニエルさんありがとう。

"The Settlers of Catan" is a board game from Germany and we played it for learning English. Because to win the game, we have to negotiate with other players.

「カタンの開拓者たち」はドイツで作られたボードゲームですが、勝つためには他のプレイヤーとの交渉が必要になるので、英語学習のためにこのゲームをプレイしてみました。


The goal of the game is to get 10 points. To get points, we need to build and develop our villages, and we need some resources for it. We can get resource by rolling the dice. But it is few to improve our villages. And then we negotiate with other players to trade resources. For example, "I want to trade my wood for your brick.". I think it's a good way to learn English especially for game lovers because we can learn English with fun of the game.

ゲームのゴールは10ポイント獲得することで、ポイントを獲得するには村を建設したり発展させるのですが、そのためには資源が必要になります。サイコロを振ることでも資源は得られるのですが、それでは足りないので、他のプレイヤーと資源の交換の交渉を行います。例えば、「私の木をあなたのレンガと交換してくれませんが」という感じです。ゲームを楽しみながら英語の勉強ができるので、ゲームが好きな方にはとてもいい学習法なのではないかと思いました。

And this was a gift from Iwaguchi-san. Chocolates from Bali. Thanks, Iwaguchi-san! I want to go to travel abroad.

Language Buddies を使ってみました

　先日Co-Edo茅場町の英語朝活に参加したときに、一緒に参加された方が協力されている Language Buddies という、英語発音矯正ツールをモニターということでいただきました。

医療器具をイメージさせる中身

　もともとは医療器具として開発されたもので、英語学習者にも有効なのではないかということで、販売され始めたそうです。







　本やビデオを見ただけではわかりづらい舌の動きが、物理的に器具を使って理解できるというもので、それぞれの音の発音用に違う形のスティックが用意されています。

　それぞれのスティックの使い方が書かれた冊子がついています。DVDなどは特にもらわなかったのですが、サイトを見るとDVD付きとなっているので、購入すると説明のDVDがもらえるのかもしれません。




　使ってみた感想としては、確かに舌がどこにあるべきかがわかりやすいです。Rなどは特に、この器具を使っているとどうやってもLの位置には舌が行きませんし、手前に巻き込む感覚もわかりやすいです。逆にR以外の音を出すにはスティックが邪魔なので、単語で練習しようとすると、目的の音が先頭にある単語以外はやりづらいですね。
音によっては、本当にこの発音で合っているのかが一人で練習しているとわからないので、その辺りは英語朝活等で発音のわかっている方に一度確認してもらいたいところです。
　それでもやはり物理的に舌の動かし方がわかるというのは大きいと思います。まだ使って数日ですが、Rの発音で舌を巻き込む感覚などはだいぶわかった気がします。一度正しく使い方を理解することが大事ですが、あとは反復して練習していけば、かなり有効なのではないでしょうか。
　しばらくは継続して使ってみたいと思います。
